With the SIUe Cougars win over St. Louis University on Saturday night they completed their third sweep of the season to improve their record to 6-10. After a six game losing streak the Cougars were able to bare down and find a way to snap a long winless drought.
On Friday night in Webster Groves the Cougars went down early in the first with a backdoor tap in by the Billikens leading goal scorer Adam Dettenmeier. The cougars tied the game at one goal a piece with a rebound goal by Brian Pickert late in the first period. In the second period the cougars once again found themselves down after the Billikens Captain Niall Caparon found the back of the net on a partial breakaway to give SLU a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. The SIUe cougars quickly rebounded back with a goal by Blake Takmajian (Chesterfield Falcons CSDHL). Takmajian went bar down after Lucas Tucker (Edwardsville, HS)threw a back hand saucer pass to Takmajian in the slot on a 2 on 1. With the second period coming to an end the cougars found themselves with a good chance to take two points from SLU. The third period continued the trend of a tight checking game with both goalies standing tall in their respected nets. The third period ended with neither team being able to find the back of the net. The five-minute overtime started three on three with both a Cougar and Billiken player sitting in the box for a minute in a half. The Cougars found themselves on their heels late in overtime with the SLU Billikens pressuring hard in SIUe’s defensive end. Cougars goalie Justin Nosser (Edwardsville, HS) continued his strong play and was able to fight off the Billikens scoring chances to push the game into a shootout. After the first round of the shootout neither teams could find the back of the net. In the second round Nosser was able to stop the Billikens captain Caparon to give the cougars second shooter Kain Henson who found a way to sneak one past the Billikens net minder. With the cougars up one going into the third round Justin Nosser once again stood tall and was able to stop the third Billikens shooter to secure the victory for the Cougars.
The Cougars were back at home playing at the East Alton Ice Arena for game two. The Cougars were hosting their fourth annual Veterans Day game, to honor all veterans and active duty members of U.S. military force. The cougars wore camouflage jerseys that were auctioned off throughout the game, all proceeds of the sale went to the USO Missouri. Game two started off with our National Colors being presented by the Collinsville Illinois VFW Post 5691 and a ceremonial puck drop performed by Cougar fan Tony Christopher who once served in the U.S. Air Force. The Cougars once again found themselves trailing the SLU Billikens early in the first after a Billiken player was able to sneak one by Justin Nosser from behind the net to give SLU the lead at 1-0. Just minutes later assistant captain Tyler Gilleland (Islanders, USPHL) was able to tap in a backdoor pass from Captain Andrew Bond (STL Jr Blues, NA3HL) to tie the game at 1- 1. The first period ended with the game tied and was looking to be another tightly fought battle from both sides. The Cougars were able to break out in the second period though and take a demanding lead over SLU. The scoring started with Gilleland netting his second on a rebound off an Alec Pellegrino (Michigan Warriors, NAHL) one-timer on the power play. The Cougars kept crashing the net and in the second period which led to SIUe’s third goal by Freddie Schaljo (NJ Wildcats, NA3HL) assisted by Takmajian and Lucas Tucker. Jake Aurelio (Affton, CSDHL) was able to finally capitalize on his third breakaway of the night with a snipe post and in from a Kyle Culiberk (Atlanta Fire, AAA) feed. Cougar forward Alec Pellegrino netted the last Cougar goal of the period to make it a 5-1 game leading into the third period. With a goal tending change going into the third period for the SLU Billikens the cougars put up two quick goals to further extend their lead to 7-1. The sixth goal scored for the Cougars was by Junior defensemen Kain Henson off a wrist shot from the point assisted by Zach Schingoethe (Decatur Jr Blaze, USPHL). The final cougar goal was scored by Tyler Gilleland to complete his hat trick on the night. With a commanding lead and time winding down the Cougars let off the gas at the end of the game and allowed SLU to score two quick goals to make the score 7-3. Although with a late push from the Billikens the Cougars were able to hold them off with a final score of 7-3 and complete the weekend sweep.
