Cougars look forward to matchups against SLU
By Luke Clevenger
The Cougars are about to enter their third straight home and home series against a crosstown rival, this time against the Saint Louis University Billikens squad. The Cougars walked away from the previous two series with a pair of wins against McKendree and a pair of losses to Lindenwood.
“I was very happy with our responses this weekend. We had a tough weekend but we are happy with some of the aspects of this weekend. We’re looking for an intense week of practice and hopefully to come in to this weekend with momentum” Said coach Nick Zellmer. The Cougars certainly played a cleaner game on Sunday, staying out of the penalty box the entire night. “Against a good team like Lindenwood, it can be hard to stay out of the box. Our team played disciplined, we played hard, and for the most part we didn’t play cheap... Discipline is going to be huge [moving forward.]”
The Billikens should be an easier matchup on paper for the Cougars, carrying a 2-5 record in MACHA play. Despite the Cougars 4-1-1 record in the same conference, Zellmer said it’s not as easy as looking at paper. “It’s the age old expression, we take every game as seriously as the last one. We’re not concerned [with Saint Louis’ record] at all. We know we had a tough weekend here, but we’re happy with some of the aspects of our game. We’re just trying to highlight those areas going forward, and picking up the areas where maybe we were lacking.”
One particular area Zellmer was pleased with was the improvement some players made in the past couple of weekends. When asked about players to watch in the weekend matchup against Saint Louis he said “[Alec] Marshall had a good weekend of hockey and he’s starting to compete physically. [Tyler] Smith is really picking up a lot of confidence, he’s possessing it and making plays. Terrance [Puribhat] is continuing to make strides as well. Some of these guys who are first year players, who maybe weren’t getting a lot of ice time to start, are taking some good steps and contributing.”
The Cougars will play Saint Louis at the Webster Ice Arena on Friday, November 8th at 7:00pm. The Cougars will play the second game at the East Alton Ice Arena on Saturday night at 6:45. The Saturday game will be the Cougar’s special military night, in which they will honor America’s military around the globe and wear special camouflage jerseys.
