Cougar Hockey starts fresh
SIUE Hockey looks forward to new season with high hopes
By Luke Clevenger
At 7:45 AM on Tuesday in the East Alton Ice Arena the Cougars had a lot in front of them. A fresh season, ready to be filled with thrills and defeat. The ice was freshly zambonied, looking like a clean slate on which the new 2018-19 SIUE Cougars can make their mark.
The Cougars come into the season with some new freshmen and a few notable veterans on the roster. The new recruits come from close and afar, from communities such as Edwardsville, Denver, and the brilliantly named Tiny, Ontario. This represents a bit of a shift for the Cougars, who are a team on the upswing and are recruiting from far out of their local area more and more every year. While the freshman will be interesting to watch develop all year, fans’ eyes should be focused on Andrew Bond. Bond led the team by a wide margin in points last year with 22 Goals and 16 Assists in 19 games. Pending a breakout year from another player, the senior out of Bethalto seems poised to lead the pack again this year.
There are other storylines leading into the opening weekend’s games too. Goalie Patrick Crozier is looking forward to the matchups against Lewis University as much as anyone. Crozier, or “Crow” to his teammates, is a transfer from Lewis University and this series will mark his first games against his old team. Coach Nick Edwards has given confirmation that Crozier will start Friday night’s game against his old teammates.
The Cougars will also be sporting their new jerseys this weekend. The 2018/2019 season will show the SIUe Cougars wearing a different color, white, which they haven't done in many years.
The 2 game series begins at 6:15pm on Friday, and the second game is scheduled for Saturday at 3:00pm. Both games are at home for the Cougars at the East Alton Ice Arena in East Alton, Illinois. Beer will be sold at both games.
